Federal Skilled Trade Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for people who want to become permanent residents based on their qualification in a skilled trade.
To be eligible under this class, the following ways assist in determining whether a foreign national has relevant employment experience

  • Trade certification – may write a challenge test with the industry training authority
  • Acquired Canadian work experience as temporary worker with valid work permit in Canada, or
  • An offer of employment for your trade in Canada

Skilled Trades currently eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are listed in skill level B of the National Occupation Classification Matrix. They are organized under these major and minor groups of the NOC:

  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades,
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production,
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators,
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks, and
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers.

If you work in a skilled trade and want to live in Canada permanently, you must meet the relevant employment requirements set out in the NOC except for the requirement to obtain a certificate of qualification in the skilled trades issued by competent provincial authority.

Whether you will need certification will depend on where you intend to reside. To achieve this certification, the provincial or territorial trades authority must assess your training, trade experience and skills to decide if you are eligible to write the amination.
