Temporary Residents are foreign nationals who are permitted to enter and remain in Canada for a specified period of time, but who must leave by the end of the authorized period of their stay. Temporary immigration is an important type of immigration to Canada. Canada relies increasingly on temporary immigration to meet market demands. These temporary residents contribute to Canada’s economic development by filling gaps in the labour market, enhancing trade, purchasing goods and services, and increasing cultural links.
In the last 10 years, the number of temporary foreign workers has grown tremendously while more and more temporary migrant workers are becoming permanent residents in Canada. In the year 2016, a total of 78,535 work permits were issued under the TFW Program and 41,623 individuals who had previously held a work permit under the TFW Program or IMP were transitioned to permanent residents.

Many are viewed as ideal candidates for permanent residency given their language proficiency, Canadian education credentials and Canadian work experience. Canada receives international visitors annually as temporary residents, including vacationers, tourists, travellers, business visitors and people who are visiting friends and family for short periods of time. In 2016, a total of 1,347,966 applications for individuals wanting to visit Canada were approved.
This allows the Parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to stay in Canada for up to 2years and re-enter over a 10year period without the need to renew the visa.
