Express Entry was introduced in 2015 to replace the former first-come, first-served system of application processing for permanent residence. It helps create efficiencies by making electronic application under this system mandatory, allowing for quicker processing times, averaging within 6 months. It also provides exemptions to this mandatory requirement for people with special needs.
Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system for key economic immigration programs, including the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program. It manages how people apply to federal programs and selects skilled immigrants through its point-based system that allocates points to registered candidates.
In essence, the Express Entry to Canada is a program that paves the way to permanent residency by attracting high-skilled foreign workers and former international students who want to live in Canada permanently and whose skills are needed by provinces, territories and employers across the country to help build businesses and grow the economy.
Federal Skilled Worker program is one of the federal programs through Express Entry, it measures applicants using a selection grid including age, education, work experience, language ability and other qualifications needed to contribute to the Canadian labour market.
Interestingly, Express Entry is now the main source of permanent residence applications in the economic immigration. Canada plans to welcome 310,000 permanent residents to Canada in 2018 and this number would increase to 330,000 in 2019 and to 340,000 in 2020. This plan will result in the most ambitious immigration levels in recent Canadian history and create more opportunities for qualified applicants under Express Entry.
